Every hairstylist can remember the moment they became captivated by hair and also the passion for creativity it inspires. The story wasn’t any different for U.S. Marine Corps veteran Kristyl Rodrigues who discovered her adoration for hair while enrolled at Bellus Academy’s school of cosmetology in Poway, California. There Kristyl was studying cosmetology and pursuing an experienced beauty education. In her story, there’s a valuable message that may be shared. “It doesn’t matter where you begin or how you begin. I want to be able to spark that passion into people where we’re creating this industry 10 times better, we’re learning from our background and we’re continuing that legacy,” shared Kristyl. A symptom: Inspiration Can Strike Anywhere
Kristyl joined the Marine Corps in 2014 and it was enlisted in the ages of 19. Her first duty station what food was in Okinawa, Japan, then an area operation in Korea. Every Sunday during Kristyl’s in time Korea, a barber would visit the site and give haircuts for the Marines. However, this happened: “I was at a tent doing my own hair,” shares Kristyl. “I definitely do shape ups and line ups for me, nothing too crazy, while i had a Marine Sergeant come up to me and enquire of me for the haircut. I had created never cut anybody’s hair before however jumped directly into it and he ended up loving it…and with his outreach and leadership, literally the very next day, I’d 13 Marines lined up to me.”
This is the first moment that Kristyl considered barbering like a future career-she concluded on charging $5 a haircut and that maybe it was. Using a strong intrinsic motivation and entrepreneurial spirit, she worked overnight shifts on guard duty from 12a.m. to 8a.m., then cut hair during the days. What Kristyl learned was profound: Hairdressers touch more hearts than heads every time you service litigant, there’s impact.
The Impact of the Haircut
“As a Marine, the standards for appearance are at an all-time high. The uniform has to be squared away and ironed. Everything must be flush, measured properly-there’s lots of awareness of detail,” shares Kristyl. “I was looking at Marines from top to bottom. It tore up my heart because we’re the best people with this nation and we have to be walking around as such. That’s where the impact in my mind and heart originated, and I dreamed of being able to transmit that through my hands to folks around me…and you can keep them walk around feeling proud and good from head to feet, and representing this nation as such.”
Similarities In Service: Military & Barbering
After getting back from service, Kristyl asked herself exactly what the next challenge and chapter in their life could be. That’s when she chose to pursue her education as a barber at Bellus Academy. Gaining knowledge from her history and impatient, she found many similarities in their own service and in the role of a barber.
