It is said that history is presented with the victor — that as a direct consequence of conflict, the defeated tend to be portrayed as being a collective, detestable mass that follows a similarly repulsive value system. Yet, though his Confederate Army is at the losing end of America’s Civil War, Robert E. Lee is remembered as one of the most celebrated generals in American history.
Rational ideas of armed conflict presume that defeated soldiers must be denounced, not exalted; punished, not praised; and despised, not admired. However, Lee is entirely with the latter. What made one man, one soldier, stand out he is remembered by more Americans today than a lot of his victorious Union counterparts?
Unfortunately, it is a question a large number of volumes of books have experienced trouble answering. And, I believe you have no desire (during this moment, at least) to learn content for these depth and breadth (i admit which i can’t write it). Nonetheless, only was required to describe the reason for Lee’s appeal in a word, it might be “motivation.”
I will explore this theme while the subsequent quote:
“There is scarcely something that is correct we cannot wish to accomplish by labor and perseverance. Though the first should be earnest and the second unremitting.”

Earnest Labor
Today’s culture is but one where immediacy is glorified — through the Round the clock news cycle; to tarts that “pop” before you pour a glass of milk; to magic weight loss supplements — such that it is easy to forget that anything worth accomplishing takes earnest labor, i would define being a serious and purposeful exertion of body, mind and spirit.
When companies talk about pouring their blood, sweat and tears to their companies, they refer merely to earnest labor.
If the craft of a famous musician or star athlete appears to be look “easy,” it is made so through earnest labor.
And, once i try to achieve my goal of running a marathon, I am going to spend on one principle: you got it right, earnest labor.
The ability to learn; the energy to switch; and also the strategies by which goals are accomplished; are controlled because of your ability to give your very best, and to do this earnestly — without reservations (or a fast solution).
Unremitting Perseverance
Lee fought a constant battle for most of the Civil War. His outnumbered and poorly-supplied army shrank daily as a result of desertions by disheartened soldiers. Yet, in spite of this, he fought vigorously prior to the moment when defeat was imminent.
How many times will we quit goals when things aren’t proceeding just like we’d anticipated? Have you opt to stop smoking, but learned you needed an enormous project due at work, school, or elsewhere? Would you try setting up a habit of awakening earlier every day, but then slept in the next day and decided it’s a pointless exercise?
Lee has an answer of these, and also other, problems: unremitting perseverance, that we would define as a steady, unshakable persistence in staying with a course of action, belief, or purpose.
When I train for and eventually run the marathon, I understand that there will be a little voice around my head telling me to prevent; which it hurts too much to look to the next level. However, my unremitting perseverance in pursuing the challenge — all the way to the finish line — will enable me to pay attention only to my footsteps against the pavement; the gentle breeze passing over my ears; and also the rhythm of my breathing — thus pushing that little voice in the depths of my subconscious.

Yet, even during momentary failure, perseverance provides you with the energy to have back on your own metaphorical (or actual) horse and ride into battle (hopefully metaphorical) once more, pursuing your goals using the knowledge that will basically be learned through setback.
It is stated that history is written with the victor; and, in Lee’s case, it’s. In capturing the hearts of Americans, both through his military actions, his personal value system, and his sincere words of wisdom, Robert E. Lee is clearly victorious.
