It is often declared history is constructed from the victor — that in the aftermath of conflict, the defeated will often be portrayed as being a collective, detestable mass that follows a similarly repulsive value system. Yet, though his Confederate Army is at the losing end of America’s Civil War, Robert E. Lee is remembered as one of the most celebrated generals in American history.
Rational ideas of armed conflict presume that defeated soldiers must be denounced, not exalted; punished, not praised; and despised, not admired. However, Lee is entirely with the latter. What made one man, one soldier, stand out that he is remembered by more Americans today than lots of his victorious Union counterparts?
Unfortunately, this is the question that lots of volumes of books have experienced trouble answering. And, I think that you have no desire (through this moment, a minimum of) to read content of these depth and breadth (i admit that I couldn’t write it). Nonetheless, easily were required to describe the real reason for Lee’s appeal in a word, it would be “motivation.”

Today’s culture is a in which immediacy is glorified — in the 24 / 7 news cycle; to tarts that “pop” before you can pour a glass of milk; to magic weight loss pills — so that you can easily forget that anything worth accomplishing takes earnest labor, that we would define being a serious and purposeful exertion of body, mind and spirit.
When ever companies mention pouring their blood, sweat and tears inside their companies, they refer simply to earnest labor.
When the craft of the famous musician or star athlete generally seems to look “easy,” it can be made so through earnest labor.
And, while i make an effort to achieve my goal of building a marathon, Let me agree to one principle: you guessed it, earnest labor.
To be able to learn; the energy to improve; along with the means by which goals are accomplished; are controlled by your power to work tirelessly, and to do this earnestly — without reservations (or even a fast solution).
Unremitting Perseverance
Lee fought a constant battle for a lot of the Civil War. His outnumbered and poorly-supplied army shrank daily because of desertions by disheartened soldiers. Yet, in spite of this, he fought vigorously before moment when defeat was imminent.
How many times can we quit goals when things aren’t proceeding the same manner we had anticipated? Would you plan to stop smoking cigarettes, then again found you possessed a massive project due at the office, school, or elsewhere? Would you try building a habit of getting up earlier in the morning, but then slept within the next day and decided it’s a pointless exercise?
Lee has an answer of these, and also other, problems: unremitting perseverance, that i would define as being a steady, unshakable persistence in sticking with an alternative, belief, or purpose.
While i train for and eventually run the marathon, I know that there might be a little voice in doing my head saying to avoid; which it hurts a lot of to travel a step further. However, my unremitting perseverance in following your challenge — to the finish line — will enable me to concentrate only to my footsteps from the pavement; the gentle breeze passing over my ears; along with the rhythm of my breathing — thus pushing that little voice into the depths of my subconscious.
Nevertheless, robert e lee timeline; 4,560,000 is a perfect example that harboring unremitting perseverance does not ensure victory. After all, he was defeated in war. Yet, even just in momentary failure, perseverance offers you the ability to obtain back on the metaphorical (or actual) horse and ride into battle (hopefully metaphorical) once again, pursuing your ultimate goal with the knowledge that can just be learned through setback.
It is said that history is presented with the victor; and, in Lee’s case, it really is. In capturing the hearts of american citizens, both through his military actions, his personal value system, and his sincere words of wisdom, Robert E. Lee is clearly victorious.
